JPG, PNG, WebP — several at once is fine

How far should you drop the quality?

80% is the sweet spot: the difference is invisible to the eye, but the file usually lands at half the size or less. Below 60% you start to see banding in smooth areas — skies, plain walls, gradients.

    Dimensions matter more than quality

The biggest saving comes from resizing, not from the quality slider. A 4000 px photo straight off a phone is wasted on a web page or a chat app. 1920 px covers desktop displays; 1080 px is plenty for mobile.

    JPG or WebP?

At the same visual quality WebP lands roughly 25–35% smaller than JPG, and every current browser supports it. Some older software and government portals still don't recognise it, so if you're uploading somewhere unfamiliar, stick with JPG.

    Hitting a size limit

Plenty of upload forms cap files at 200 KB or 500 KB. Set the max dimension to 1080 first, then walk the quality down step by step. The finished size appears next to each file so you can see exactly where you land.

    Frequently asked questions

    Will the image look worse?

At 80% quality the difference is not visible to the naked eye. Lower settings trade more quality for smaller files, and since the output size is shown next to each image you can adjust until it fits.

Can I compress a PNG with transparency?

Yes, but choosing JPG output will fill the transparent areas with white, because JPG has no alpha channel. Choose WebP to keep transparency.

    Are the files uploaded anywhere?

No. Compression uses your browser’s own graphics engine and nothing is sent to a server.

Why did one of my images barely shrink?

If it was already compressed, or already smaller than your maximum dimension, there is little left to remove. Compressing again mostly just costs quality.
